School uniforms: for or against? Thousands of articles, hundreds of broadcasts on television and radio – and still no concrete answer to this question. On the eve of each new school year this theme is repeatedly raised in completely different circles, from teachers, who are often dissatisfied with sometimes a too modern look of their students, parents, who need to spend their money to buy a uniform, and to students, who cannot get used to strict shirt and pants.
It turns out that the main argument in favor of school uniforms is discipline. The main argument against uniforms is denial of the rights of children.
Let’s first discuss the disadvantages of wearing uniforms. Firstly, uniforms really make everybody even. Children (especially 11-12 year-olds) have totally different figures, height, and body constitution. Finally, they have a different type of appearance. Thus, what fits one child might look quite ugly on the other child. To avoid this, children should have an opportunity to select a style of the uniform, like fabric, colors, etc.
Secondly, the uniform should be comfortable and nice. However, it is not always the case: in many schools, colors and the fabric of a uniform is not agreed with parents. Thus, it often happens that many uniforms have tasteless color, style, etc.
Uniforms also oppress children with their monotony. Each day, kids have to wear the same thing. It can be really annoying, especially in the age when children become indifferent to their appearance, and they want to be liked by classmates.
Some schools use uniforms as a disciplinary form, the way to control the behavior of children. If the position of the administration in matters of uniform is extremely tough, you should be on alert as a parent: the main function of the school is to teach children, not discipline them. And if the emphasis is on the uniform instead, it won’t be easy to study at such a school.
One of the advantages of a uniform is that it doesn’t distract children from studies. After all, children go to school for learning. Financial situation is very difficult for many people, and uniforms are a good way out for many. Uniforms help to save money; you just need one type of clothes for the whole year.
Children do not look like a mass, but like some integrity, and it is useful in the sense of aesthetics, and in terms of psychology – an additional moment, rallying a group, allowing raising a corporate culture.
Some schools instead of uniforms ask children to wear clothes in a business style. Business style is one of the styles of clothing, similar to the conservative that doesn’t follow fashion trends.
