Should the United States Have Dropped the Atomic Bomb

Why did the Americans bomb the Japanese cities? Each side has its own truth: according to the official version of the US, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and on Nagasaki –three days later in order to force Japan to surrender. It was necessary as quickly as possible to end the war without a costly US invasion.

In 1945, 85% of Americans approved of the move, which was considered necessary for the termination of the Second World War and prevention of costly invasion of Japan.

After 45 years since the tragedy, Thomas Ferebi, the pilot of the aircraft B-29, who personally pressed the reset button of the first atomic bomb, said in an interview that he did not regret what he had done and was not going to apologize because he’s not sure what would the result be, he had only follow the task – to throw a special bomb.

Recently, new information came up: perhaps the bombing of Hiroshima carried a different meaning. According to American historians, the US dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to start the Cold War, and not to end the Second World War, as it is commonly believed. Moreover, all this was done with only one purpose: to make an impression on the Soviet Union, according to historians, accusing Harry Truman, US president, in this tragedy. Peter Kuznick, director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University in Washington, DC, said that he knew it would start the process of destroying the human race and it was not just a war crime, it was a crime against humanity.

Again, the fact that the Second World War came to an end just after the bombing, has repeatedly been questioned. Winston Churchill said that it would be wrong to assume that Japan’s fate was sealed by the atomic bomb.

On the bombing of Hiroshima the imperial government of Japan responded only by sending to the city a special commission to study the effects of an atomic explosion. Japanese officials were more concerned about the position of the Soviet Union. And when, on August 9, Soviet troops went on the offensive, it radically changed the situation.

Soviet entry into the war with Japan plunged into utter despair and confusion of its rulers. In Tokyo, they were aware that if the Soviet Armed Forces broke the backbone of the German fascist army that was the strongest in the capitalist world, they would easily break the Japanese army.

That is why the Japanese leadership on August 9, adopted a decision to surrender.

Thus, the news about the atomic bombing of Nagasaki had no effect on the situation: the decision to surrender was a fact before the news.
