Symbolism in The Rime of Ancient Mariner

There are many interesting themes discussed in the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, including redemption and sin. For example, when the mariner shoots the albatross, he commits a sin so that his guilt starts manifesting different supernatural forms. The main reason is that the albatross represents the nature, but it means nothing to the mariner. That’s why the nature starts changing and punishing him for killing her basic symbol. He is penalized by sun rays and mocked by the sight of water that he can’t drink.

The Mariner starts realizing the meaning of the beauty of nature to him, and this is when he changes in his heart and repents his bad action. He wants to find his salvation when seeing slimy things as some creatures beautiful in a strange way. Now, he realizes that the albatross was the symbol of nature and understands that he did something wrong. Once he comes to this conclusion, the bird hung around his neck as a basic punishment falls into the water to be changed to penance.

There are 2 supernatural figures that show up, the life and the death, and they both start gambling. As a result, the main character has to live his life in death and handle his penance for the rest of his years. Besides, he needs to look for people to keep telling his tale because his soul will keep torturing him until he delivers this important message.

Another important theme discussed in The Rime of Ancient Mariner is people’s respect for nature. It’s true that most romantic poets, including Coleridge, worship its beauty. They suggest that all people should respect the creations of nature, including the sea snake and the albatross.

Take into account that the Mariner is a symbolic representation of Adam. This means that his killing of the albatross is equal to eating a forbidden fruit. For readers, it’s important to understand that the whole story takes on basic elements from the stories of the crucifixion of Christ and Adam and Eve.

Finally, the sun and the mood also play an important symbolic role in this original story. The sun represents the influence of God on wrathful power, while the moon has a more positive meaning. The Mariner’s accidents during the day are worse than the ones that happen at night. The albatross is a good symbol for all sailors and it’s often represented as the souls of lost sailors. That’s why they think that killing the albatross is a bad sign so that he becomes a symbol of committed crimes in this story.
