Among the many medical, legal, religious issues an important place is occupied by the problem of euthanasia. The phenomenon of euthanasia is food for thought of socio-legal consciousness of the population. Due to the fact that human life is the main value of modern civilization, euthanasia problem has become a way of demand. The value of human life in relation to all legal and ethical realities raises any social and legal problem (for example, the admissibility of the death penalty, abortion, human cloning), in one or another aspect affecting the right to life, to the rank of universal and global problems.
For the first time the term euthanasia was introduced by the eminent English philosopher Francis Bacon in his work On the Dignity and Enhancement of Sciences. In this work, Bacon said that the doctor’s duty is not only in the restoration of health, but also in alleviating the suffering caused by the disease, when there is no hope of salvation, and euthanasia already itself is happiness.
For many primitive societies killing the elderly and the sick or not taking them with you when you change place was a customary rule. The practice of euthanasia was typical for ancient Greece, where a suicide was encouraged of people who have reached 60 years of age.
Considering the problem of euthanasia, there are the two opposites. One cannot draw a conclusion on the prohibition of euthanasia or its promotion. Bacon said that doctor’s responsibility is not only to cure, but also kill to relieve suffering. Yeah, maybe in hundredths of cases, considering passive euthanasia is permissible. Nobody wants to die in the torments of hell. But on the other hand everybody is given the main right – the right to live. And no one has the right to force the patient to give up that right.
But the main problem arises in relation to patients who are not able to decide to stop living: being in a coma, mentally retarded, including suffering from senile marasmus, and very young children. There should be someone else making that choice for them. But who, relatives, authorities or medical representatives? And where is the confidence that their solution will be the best? Currently, medicine is developing very fast, and now there are ways of treating diseases that until recently were considered hopeless; thus disconnecting the patient from life support systems, we deprive him or her of a chance to wait for a cure for the illness.
