Late Nineteenth Century American Expansionism

The late 19th century was time to show off for America. The foundation for this has been built in the form of capital, strong economy, and the industrialization process. The US had everything – ambition, interest, land hunger, and pride – to start an imperial policy in the international arena and become one of the greatest powers.

The United States produced more than consumed, the number of workers exceeded the number of jobs, the market was full of products, thus it was necessary to find new ways of marketing the products, capital and labor. All this meant the economic supremacy of the United States. Its main mission was to bring civilization to other developing countries.

The US foreign policy at the time had two trends: isolationism and expansionism. The growth of economic power gave rise to the desire of foreign expansion.

Expansionists argued that it was time for the United States to intervene in the struggle for supremacy on the sea. The main ideologist of expansionists was a naval officer Alfred Thayer Mahan. He argued that the power in the sea is the main factor that determines the fate of the country in the struggle for life and the right to exist.

Mahan considered a priority the establishment of bases on the islands of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and the construction of the Panama Canal, which would connect the two oceans. According to Mahan, the immediate object of expansion was Latin America.

Since the end of the 19th century, US ruling circles have begun to actively implement the ideas of Mahan. In 1898, the US began the war against Spain, which suppressed anti-colonial uprising in Cuba. The reason for the war was the explosion of the American cruiser Maine in Havana harbor. The American fleet defeated the Spanish squadron near Cuba and the Philippines. Spain was forced to make peace.

Under the peace treaty, Cuba was declared independent. USA got the island of Puerto-Rico in the Caribbean and the Philippines, Guam, Samoa, and subsequently the island of Hawaii in the Pacific.

Thus, the US also joined the colonial division of the world.

In the end of the 19th century, all the signs of loss of industrial precedence by England became to show. But the British didn’t care about it; their main concern was the building of colonial empire. Colonies were the main source of income and the market for industrial products.

By the end of the 19th century, the USA became a leading industrial power in the world, and the growth of the military-economic potential allowed proceeding to the implementation of an active foreign policy.
