Difference between Judy Blume’s Three Novels

Judy Blume is an American writer whose books for young people were translated into 30 languages. She received an impressive number of literary prizes for her stories. Judy’s secret of success is that she was one of the first to speak on a very uncomfortable but important for teenage literature topics.

Characters in Judy Blume’s novels in a way remain with the reader long after the novel is over. Blume reveals in her novels people with real problems, she is honest and humorous in her works. This combination is perfect for bright descriptions of real life. Blume’s three novels – Forever, Are you there God? It’s me Margaret, and Summer Sisters – focus on women who have to deal with such problems as falling in love for the first time, selecting a religion, and the fight for finding a place in the world. People may feel embarrassed or shy about expressing their true feelings. Blume teaches the reader that it is fine to feel what one feels, and it is normal. With the help of her characters she shows that they experience the same things. By taking the reader on a journey through the characters’ times and distresses in her novels she demonstrates the reader that it is okay to be different. Blume’s novels are filled with truth and realism that often readers become a part of the character. Using sensitivity and humor, Blume showed us fears, joys, and uncertainty the one is surrounded by when growing up.

The main heroine of the book, Are you there God? It’s me Margaret, is an eleven-year girl, Margaret, growing-up in a multi-religious family and trying to decide on her own faith and religion. In the course of the story Margaret turns to God with prayers and questions that always begin with the words: Are you there God? It’s me Margaret.

The novel Summer Sisters in comparison to other two, Are you there God? It’s me Margaret and Forever, is aimed at adult audience, because of its heavy sexual content. The book tells about two friends who spend every summer together. The two girls are different – Catilin is popular and beautiful, while Vix is shy but intellectual. As the years go by, the girls become closer but soon they see that their friendship is tense.

The novel Forever is a story of first love, adolescence, and finding one’s self. The novel dealing with teenage sexuality was the frequent target of censorship.

So, the main differences in three novels are the following: Are you there God? It’s me Margaret fosuses on searches of one’s religion, Forever deals with teenage sexuality, while Summer Sister are directed at adults.
