Symbolism of the Glass Pap

1984 is a famous dystopian novel written by George Orwell, and it tells readers a story of the future society controlled by the Party and Big Brother in Oceania. Winston Smith is the main character of this book and he keeps struggling to save the sense of his personal identity because the Party does its best to meld all people into obedient citizens.

At one point of this novel, he decides to take a trip to that part of the city where proles live. These are people who are left alone by Big Brother and allowed to live in a comparatively free manner. While being among proles, Winston enters some junk shop, and this is where he buys an interesting old glass paperweight.

For readers, it’s important to understand the significance of this symbol, and this goal is easy to achieve by taking a look at what the main character did before making this kind of purchase. While walking among proles, Smith tried to start a conversation with one old man who lived quite a long life and remembers the times before the revolution that installed Big Brother and the Party into their power. After buying him a few drinks and asking specific questions about the past, Winston ends up with a frustration because it seems like the old man can’t answer any questions clearly so that he only gives out meaningless details of his ordinary life before the revolution.

At this point of time, Smith thinks that old days were idyllic, as this is when people had their rights and access to their meaningful lives. Then he goes into a local junk shop where he sees a glass paperweight so that it’s a sort of physical manifestation of that time for him. The most appealing thing about this paperweight is the air that seems to belong to the past, but not its beauty.

It’s true that the main character can’t scarify his curiosity and interest in the past. That’s why he wants to find something that will symbolize the idealized notion of his perceptions of that time. Later, this glass paperweight will symbolize his love with Julia, and Winston will destroy it when their affair is discovered and finished. As you can see, this item has different symbolic meanings, including the one of the world before Big Brother. Other unique meanings of this glass paperweight include a small rebellion of Winston and something that happens to fragile things in a tyranny. You should read this famous novel written by George Orwell to determine your unique meanings of this pap because they can be personalized.
