Defeat of the Vikings – Who Are They and Why They Failed

Vikings were a huge power from late eighth century to middle eleventh century. They appeared on a territory of a modern Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Viking age started from their first big campaign to England in 789 year. That year three Viking ships invaded the territory of modern England.

Viking tribes started their campaigns due to two reasons – hunger and overpopulation. These two diseases were an eternal companion of northern states in those years.

Vikings were ethnically heterogeneous; their movement included such tribes as Vahram, Ruyan, Nordic Baltic nations, Baltic Slavs – Wends and etcetera.

Spoils of war always served as an important source of enrichment for notables in the north Scandinavian tribes. Maritime development gave Viking more opportunities to organize their campaigns in many different countries. In 789 year three ships with Vikings attacked Dorset in the South West England. In 793, the Vikings were in St Cuthbert's in the northeast of the island of Lindisfarne and in 794 attacked the monastery of Jarrow in northeast England. In 812 they started the civil war for the Danish throne and in 839 they founded the kingdom of Ireland, with its capital in Armagh. Vikings reached Spain and Lisbon in 844. In 850 they also raided England and discovered the island of Iceland in the 860. They were even in the North Africa and Italy those days.

The ninth and the tenth century were times of the huge Vikings success. They were almost everywhere in see Europe, England, Ireland, Northern Africa and etcetera. In 945 Harald Bluetooth of Denmark becomes King; in 1013 Sven Forkbeard finally conquered England. Jarl Ingvar Traveller Varangian made the last trip to the Caspian Sea in 1036-1042 years, and possibly visited East Georgia. The end of the Vikings Era was really close. In 1066 the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada, son of King Yaritsleyva (Yaroslav the Wise), invaded England and was killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The last significant date for Viking Era was in 1066 - there was the Battle of Hastings (Senlak on the river), after the victory in which the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror became king of England. Vikings were really a huge movement in the ninth – eleventh century. However, their gains didn’t give them anything when their era ended.
