Diversity in management, or its lack, is having the mixture of blacks, women, and other minorities in management positions as there is in that local population. Having a diversified workforce is not something a firm should have, it is some thing that has already happened or is soon going to happen because we have a more diversified population. This is why it is necessary to train the management to deal with this imminence.
Even though there is a fast increase in the diversification of population on Long Island, which leads to a diversified workforce, there is no a well-diversified management in most firms on the island.
Two-thirds of the companies in the island don’t have Hispanics, blacks, or Asians at anything above the vice president level. Also, 13% of all the companies surveyed said that they had more than one minority in their executive department. Even though there was an increase in women that has outnumbered the number of men, only 10% of women work in the ececutive department.
The interesting fact about the issue of diversity in management is that the people who open positions to minorities and women, the CEOs, don t see a problem. They said that they see no liomitations to women that would obstruct them from working in executive departments.
The fact that these companies didn’t diversification in their management, they will in future find it difficult to do business because their business has failed to keep up with the changes taking place in the market place, where increase of diversity is happening. For example, as the customer base changes due to high level of diversity, the company would need the same kind of people to work in the business to help facilitate the needs of customers. As a result of this, if more companies became diverse, this would most likely positively influence the economy.
Diversification of management is often confused with affirmative action. Affirmative action is help to correct the wrongs done to minorities in the past. It is based more on the historical aspect of discrimination and is being used to compensate the previous injustices and hire minorities in an organization.
Diversifying management is founded more on changing the culture of the organization to help them become more ready to accept minorities into their firm as much as they are willing to accept white people. The idea here is to show companies that diversification of a company and its management will help their firm become more profitable as it will be able to see the needs of a broader range of people.
