Wordsworth and Writing His Defense

William Wordsworth is a representative of the older generation of English Romantics, one of the so-called Lake poets, who represents a whole epoch in the history of English literature. Together with Coleridge he realized one of the most significant reforms of poetic language, laying the foundation of philosophical and aesthetic principles of the new poetry.

Wordsworth was friends with Coleridge. The result of their friendship was the appearance of the book Lyrical Ballads Lyrical Ballads. Lyrical Ballads was a milestone in the development of English literature, literary historians say that the beginning of the romantic period in the English culture began with this work.

The novelty of the poetry collection, according to Wordsworth, was the appeal to new topics and usage of the new language. Unlike contemporary authors, oriented on classical poetry, Wordsworth was not attracted by sublime and significant things.

In his poems included in the collection of Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth presented most of the themes devoted to the life of the peasants, or other representatives of the lower strata. Poetic speech is clear; most of the words are borrowed from everyday vocabulary, so there are no unusual comparisons or too complicated metaphors.

In several poems, Wordsworth makes children the heroes. Thus, in a poem We Are Seven, the author tells about a meeting with a peasant girl. The poem does not contain any deep philosophical truths, and the poet doesn’t try to convince the reader that the child’s view of the world is inherent in the very nature of certain mysticism; he just shows the child, whose consciousness still doesn’t have such thing as death.

Another poem in Lyrical Ballads, The Idiot Boy, became well-known thanks to the criticism with which it was attacked by the poet’s contemporaries. Many readers were shocked by the idea that the lyrical hero was a mentally handicapped boy. At that time there was a view that image of mentally disabled people in the literature can only evoke a feeling of disgust in a reader, so this topic was considered unaesthetic. But Wordsworth had no intention to shock the tastes of the audiences. Crazy characters appear in other collections of poems The Thorn and The Mad Mother.

The second edition of Lyrical Ballads has been significantly supplemented by the inclusion of new poems, mainly written by Wordsworth. If the first edition was dominated by poetry, created in the ballad genre, the second one contained a number of poetry with a strong lyricism.
