Iraq War – Why Saddam Needed to Be Eliminated

Military operation of US and allied countries began in 2003, and invasion of the Iraqi capital took the Americans only 20 days. The result was an invasion to overthrow the government of Saddam Hussein.

US authorities have begun an invasion under the slogan of fighting Al Qaeda, because after the attacks of September 11, 2001 the sphere of national interests of the USA was expanded on all the world. According to US authorities, the terrorist network was personally supported by Saddam Hussein.

Later it turned out that Al-Qaeda was not even in Iraq. Hussein, who created a strong system of special services, controlled the entire territory, and militants could not operate freely in the country. But after the fall of his regime, according to estimates of human rights organizations, the number of terrorist attacks in Iraq increased seven times in the first three years. And most of them were done by Al-Qaeda.

Another reason for the US presence in Iraq was the statement that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, argued that Iraq was in breach of resolutions and had nuclear and chemical weapons. It was only later, when neither of them was found.

The third reason for the war was the tyranny of the government and the imposition of democracy. This argument has become ideal for a full-scale media campaign in support of the invasion of Americans. On the screens and pages of the local media there were constant reports about the horrors taking place in Iraq under Saddam regime.

Saddam Hussein was a dictator, a bloody dictator. He was responsible for hundreds of deaths of people that were killed in order to strengthen his personal power. During the war, Saddam Hussein carried out the operation Anfal against the Kurds, during which his army used chemical weapons. He was deposed in April 2003 as a result of the invasion of the multinational coalition forces led by the US and the UK and later he was hanged by the verdict of the Supreme Court of Iraq.

Neither the overthrow of the regime nor the death of Hussein brought peace to Iraq. Ten years after the arrival of Americans in the country, at least 134,000 civilians died. The war and all the surrounding circumstances have killed even more Iraqis. The country’s GDP is growing, but at the same time the conflicts on religious and ethnic grounds, as well as the struggle for resources continues.

In 2011, the US withdrew its troops from Iraq. After this, immediately began an armed struggle against the rebel movements and the central government, which is still ongoing.
