Criticisms by Ray Bradbury

In the preface to the novel, Ray Bradbury wrote about the history of the creation of his masterpiece. In the 1930s of the last century, a writer lived in Los Angeles and often watched movies. Traditionally, before each film newsreels were shown, which demonstrated the Nazis burning books. These videos touched Ray Bradbury so much that he decided to create a novel Fahrenheit 451. During the Great Depression, the science fiction writer spent free time in the public library and the books were his best friends.

In the preface, Ray Bradbury tells us that he is Guy Montag and offers to follow him in a journey which is 130 pages long.

451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature, at which paper ignites and burns. With this epigraph the novel starts. The author takes us into the future, where machines are of science fiction, where all people live according to the law, thinking standard. It is prohibited to keep books in their homes. Firefighters do not extinguish fires, but only encourage them. It is the world of velocity, amusements, and numbers, where people do not remember their past and don’t think about the future.

The protagonist of the novel is Guy Montag, a fireman. He enjoys the fire; he feels he is a conductor, performing a symphony of fire and destruction. He likes to turn to ashes not just paper, but torn and charred pages of history. But soon the reader sees that he is romantic. The first crack in the mind of Montag appeared after the meeting with Clarisse McClellan, a girl who did not live according to the laws of the city, who everybody considered crazy because she was not like the others. Her world consisted of dandelion, droplets of rain, dew, the moon, the wind. Clarisse is naturalness and life. Clarisse lit in the soul of Guy that spark that sometimes has sparked and died away, by asking him a question Montag had never thought about: Are you happy?

After the meeting, Montag’s own home seemed cold, like a tomb filled with impenetrable darkness. He saw his wife: hair burned with the chemical composition, eyes with a dull luster, and painted moody mouth.

Montag was shocked by the act of a woman, who died along with her books. Her death is a form of protest against this world, a rebellion against the laws of the city. In her house Montag secretly takes a few books. He wants to know what is written in the books, why a woman agrees to die rather than leave them. Montag goes to Professor Faber, who tells him that the book is only one of the receptacles where people keep what they are afraid to forget. Books have quality, they have a face. They breathe.
