Biography of Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was the great American writer and poet. He is one of the key representatives of American Romanticism. Poe is also widely known as the editor, critic and creator of the detective fiction genre in literature.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, the United States. His parents were actors who worked in wandering troupes. They died when Edgar was only two years. Edgar's mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, was from England, and Edgar's father, David Poe, was an American of Irish descent. After becoming an orphan, the boy was accepted and adopted by a wealthy merchant John Allan from Virginia.

He attended the boarding school in England, and in 1826 he entered the University of Virginia in aristocratic Charlottesville. During his college years, he was very fond of gambling and participated in the carousing that provoked conflicts with his stepfather. After one of these quarrels, the future writer had left the home of foster parents. He eventually dropped out of the school. Not long after, in 1827, he had made the first step in his literary career by publishing a collection of poems "Tamerlane and Other Poems.”

Meanwhile, John Allan still insisted on Edgar completing his education. Edgar entered the Military Academy at West Point in March of 1830. Yet, in March of 1831, he was expelled and got into a fight with his foster father again.

He soon moved to Philadelphia and joined the magazine’s editorial house. It seemed like his life was finally getting better. He even published some other of his works, among them, was "Grotesque and Arabesque". The success and popularity, however, came to the writer with the poem "The Raven", written in 1845 in New York. After it was published, he was immediately invited to work for the prestigious journal, but his success did not last long. The magazine quickly went bankrupt, besides Poe’s wife died. Edgar got addicted to alcohol, drugs and partially lost his mind. Despite this, he continued to write. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849, a few days after he was found lying unconscious on the road in Baltimore.

Poe’s unique style of writing had few followers in America. In the European literacy, however, there were some inspired writers, for example Charles Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé, Oscar Wilde, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Robert Louis Stevenson.
