The Qualities of the Prince Written by Niccol Machiavelli

Almost five centuries ago, great Florentine, Niccolo Machiavelli, wrote two treatises, The Prince and Discourses on Livy. These two works should not be compares, as they complement each other.

In a treatise The Prince Machiavelli draws the ideal image of the ruler, without which, according to the author, Italy pants. The ideal image is not the image of the ideal ruler. Machiavelli recognizes that democracy must have certain prerequisites, and in times of crisis society needs the sole ruler. The will of one should give a state its order.

Creating the image of his sovereign, Machiavelli puts in front of him two tasks – free Italy from the foreign domination, and then unite the country. The immediate objective of the Prince is the liberation of Italy, while the unification of the country is more a dream, which realization Machiavelli is afraid of.

There should be an extraordinary person to perform the most important task. After not finding a worthy candidate in contemporary reality, Machiavelli created the perfect image. The Prince of Machiavelli is a cultural hero, called to transform Italy. Hi is a titan, which stands on a par with such great personalities of the past as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. Machiavelli gradually transforms the Prince into a mythological hero.

Machiavelli does not consider it necessary to distinguish between public and private in the image of the Prince, which emphasizes the value of his character and the naturalness of his actions.

The Prince reflects his era as a literary hero is a reflection of its time. The Prince is intended to overcome the trends of the time, in particular release and unite Italy, shattering prevailing at the time forces of fragmentation and enslavement.

Accordingly, the qualities Machiavelli gives to his hero are supernatural in the sense that none of the real people of the time had them. The Prince is a military leader, bold, resolute, and combative.

The Prince is determined, if necessary, cruel. The cruelty is mainly justified by the interests and welfare of the state. At the same time the Prince cares not to incur the general hatred, inspiring both fear and love to people, where a leading role is given to fear. The Prince is a sensible and realistic politician. He does not despise nor insults. Common sense or the wisdom of the Prince is necessary for the successful conduct of public affairs.

When speaking about the qualities of the Prince, Machiavelli brings morality from politics. The end justifies the means – that’s the credo of the Prince by Machiavelli.
