The El Niño Phenomenon

El Nino is a famous weather phenomenon caused by the warm water from the western part of the Pacific Ocean flows to the east. It’s true that the effects of this phenomenon can be seen in different parts of the world, but keep in mind that different regions may experience varying weather anomalies.

What is its definition? Basically, El Nino is the abnormal weather pattern caused by the warming of the Pacific Ocean near the equator. It happens when standard trade winds either reverse or weaken, and this is what lets the warm water (that normally stays in the western part of the ocean) flow to the east. This warm water displaces the cool one that can be found near the surface of the ocean, thus setting specific atmospheric changes that have an impact on normal weather patterns almost in the entire world.

When it comes to water temperatures of the ocean during this natural phenomenon, you should understand that they increase, but El Nino doesn’t happen in a perfectly regular pattern. There are certain suggestions that it happens every 2-7 years. Besides, think about an opposite natural phenomenon that occurs after El Nino, and it’s called La Nina. This is when the eastern part of the ocean has cooler than standard temperatures near the equator.

What are the effects of El Nino? Take into account that they are quite strong because they can have a negative impact on the world’s weather systems, but these changes vary around the globe considerably. This natural phenomenon can cause severe floods and storms along the Pacific coast of America. For example, Ecuador and Peru suffer from its brutal forces the most. This region has an increased rain fall, but the effects of El Nino are felt not only through heavy rains, but it also causes the death of large fishes.

It’s true that this phenomenon is not all bad to America because it brings mild winters and decreased the intensity and number of hurricanes. Don’t forget that El Nino is characterized by quite warm ocean temperatures and it acts just like the oscillation of the entire ocean-atmosphere system in tropical Pacific areas. This is what has many important consequences for weather in the world.

In addition, there are other crucial consequences of El Nino, and that’s why people need to observe conditions to predict this natural phenomenon in both short-term and long-term. The origins of its name are interesting because it means a little boy and a Christ child in Spanish.

El Nino is a famous weather phenomenon caused by the warm water from the western part of the Pacific Ocean flows to the east. It’s true that the effects of this phenomenon can be seen in different parts of the world, but keep in mind that different regions may experience varying weather anomalies.
