The Intercellular Adhesion Molecule in Relationship to Cold Virus

There are many interesting studies and findings when it comes to the intercellular adhesion molecule in relations to rheumatic diseases and cold viruses. Basically, the role played by this molecule is carefully examined. Cell-cell adhesion is necessary at any stage of developing, establishing, and maintaining organized structures and functions of different multicellular organisms.

Cells are those basic units that are required to all living things. As an individual unit, cells can digest its unique nutrients that provide them with the necessary energy. Besides, they can replicate themselves to produce their future generations. This is how cooperative forms of quite similar cells start forming tissues, while the same cooperation between tissues forms important organs or the functional units of organisms. This means that intercellular adhesion brings all cells together and helps them perform different needs.

One of the simplest examples of cells abilities to recognize and adhere to each other is about those organisms that live most of their lives as single cells, but they can form multicellular aggregate and gather for certain purposes. When starving, some single-cell organisms start banding together to develop special cells that are needed for their reproduction. This is when these cells at the center of developing aggregate the necessary secrete chemicals that cause others to bond very tightly into groups.

Take a look at slime mold amoebas and you will understand that starvation can cause the secretion of a special compound that causes all cells to stick to each other’s ends. They keep gatherings so that cells produce other cell-surfaces used to stick to each other over the entire surface, thus forming an extracellular matrix.

In conclusion, this kind of adhesion is necessary to all development stages and plays an extra important role when it comes to maintaining and establishing organized structures and functions of all kinds of multicellular organisms. If to believe the differential regulation of cell-cell adhesion molecules, isoforms in cells can be identified as the ones that mediate this process. They can be expressed in alterations and both space and sequence in terms of their normal distribution so that they are often associated with different changes in cell morphology. That’s why studying this type of adhesion is important.
