The Blaise Pascal’s Arguments on God Existence

Blaise Pascal was one of the prominent scientists, who were at the foundations of modern physics. But not everyone knows that the founder of a classical hydrostatics, the discoverer of the principle of the hydraulic press, a well-known inventor and mathematician, was a deeply religious man. Moreover, Pascal used science to confirm his Christian beliefs.

Pascal spoke against the rational idea of God. He taught that God is unknowable, and human knowledge itself is limited. A man is in a contradictory position, because he can’t have complete ignorance, nor a comprehensive knowledge. For a man the truth is always partial, relative.

Man needs no idea of God, but a living, personal God. This idea of Pascal is briefly and clearly expressed in the famous Memorial or Pascal’s Amulet.

After 1654, Pascal, a brilliant mathematician and physicist, refused to serve to science, became a recluse, and was writing a book about Christianity, which was never finished.

In the book, Pascal deployed in a fragmentary form a solid religious and ethical, system which is based on the principles of agnosticism. The book is divided into two parts: part 1 is about the man who does not know God, and part 2 is about the man who found God.

Man, knowing the nature, will inevitably come to the idea of infinity, to a sense of self-abandonment to the infinite worlds. The man in the universe is doomed to live between two abysses – infinity abyss and the abyss of nothingness. As if replying to Descartes, Pascal proposed to abandon the search for reliable knowledge, i.e., scientific truth. Knowledge is limited, while human life is short-lived. The appearance of a human being into the world is casual for Pascal, which is the reason to think about the higher purpose of a man.

If a person is only a repository of errors, and knowledge is useless for him, then you need to look for a criterion, the true principle of human existence. Pascal to some extent follows the logic of Descartes, from the denial of a vague and illusory to significant. But if for Descartes the idea of the existence is reliable, the truth of Pascal is outside of a human. Search of God – this is what gives meaning to human life.

Pascal said that the supreme greatness can be achieved not by self-blinding with knowledge, but through the gift of divine grace. A man makes a choice – if you choose God, you gain confidence, and if you choose the world and knowledge, then you doubt the truth of the known. For Pascal this choice is unequivocally, it is in favor of God.
