The Most Important Themes within Othello

Othello is one of the most famous literary works written by Shakespeare. When reading this book, you will be able to establish the main themes that revolve around such important matters as jealousy, love, pride, and fidelity. There are other issues that are worth of your attention, including the ones discussed below.

Basically, jealousy is one of the main themes of Othello because it serves as its backbone. The main reason is that all the events that happen in this play are triggered by it. Jealousy is portrayed by 3 characters, including Othello, Roderigo, and Iago. The jealousy of the latter one is originated from dissatisfaction toward Othello who decides to promote a lieutenant post to Cassio who is a less experienced soldier. This is what drives him to planning his revenge to get back his reputation. Roderigo’s jealousy is caused by watching his first love (Desdemona), falling into the hands of Othello, but it’s harmless because he has no evil plans in his mind. In Othello, jealousy is described as a disease that keeps spreading from one person to another, thus destructing everything and everyone in its way.

Another important theme discussed by the author in this play is reputation because it relates to people’s pride. There are many characters who progress alongside this interesting theme, including Cassio, Othello, and others. They all depict their reputation as important as their pride while reacting to different situations. As an example, reputation for Cassio is something that makes him feel better because people see him in more positive ways. Iago is a character who deserves your full attention because his hatred, jealousy, evil, and betrayal are all resulted by his ideas of reputation.

The third significant theme depicted by Shakespeare in Othello is fidelity. When analyzing this subject, it’s necessary to get a better idea of its underlying keys. There are many critiques who claims that this theme is what actually the whole play is all about. Keep in mind the fidelity can be analyzed in many ways, including relationships between spouses and friends. It’s true that fidelity can’t be complete without enough trust because the lack of any of these elements won’t promise people a strong and lasting relationship. Finally, women’s status is another theme that is present in Othello, and it’s shown through the characters of Emilia and Desdemona.
