Oedipus Rex by Sophocles Tragic Hero

In the tragedy Oedipus Rex, Sophocles reveals one of the most important issues of his time – the will of the gods and man’s free will.

The central image of Sophocles’s tragedy is Oedipus Rex, whom people see as a just ruler. Priest calls him the best of men. He saved Thebes from the monster, oppressing the city, and magnified a wise rule. Oedipus Rex feels responsible for the fate of the people, for their country and willing to do anything to stop the plague in the country. Thinking only of the state’s welfare, he suffers from a citizens’ distress. The driving force of the king’s actions is the desire to help poor and those who suffer. Oedipus is not a tyrant: he stops the quarrel with Creon at the request of citizens. He considers himself a mediator between gods and men, and repeatedly calls himself an assistant of gods. Gods command and their will is implemented by the king Oedipus, and citizens must obey orders. Even the priest in rescuing Thebes from the monster sees the action of the gods that chose Oedipus as an instrument of their will. However, Oedipus can’t know the will of the gods, and believing in insight of priests, he turns to the seer Tiresias.

Suspecting that the priest hides the name of the murderer, Oedipus thinks that Tiresias himself participated in the crime: respect is replaced by anger, which he is easy yielded to. Anger embraces him in a conversation with Creon. Suspecting Creon in intrigues, Oedipus in a state of extreme irritation insults him.

Intemperate character of Oedipus was the cause of the murder of an old man on the road. Oedipus is able to feel deeply. Sufferings as a result of the crime are worse than death. He is guilty towards the parents and children born in a sinful marriage. For this guilt, though involuntary, King Oedipus punishes himself severely.

The composition of the tragedy is concluded in the final part, where King Oedipus says three big monologues. And none of them shows Oedipus, who proudly considered himself the savior of the country. Now he is an unhappy man, redeeming suffering with severe guilt.

The tragedy of Sophocles ends with the words of the chorus ends about the variability of human fate and the inconstancy of happiness. The songs of the choir, often expressing the author’s opinion, are closely connected with the developing events.

Each new statement, which Oedipus seeks to prove his innocence, leads to the recognition of guilt by the hero. This reinforces personal tragedy of Rex Oedipus.
