The Main Causes of Latin American Independence

Why did Latin America rebel and declare its independence? Basically, there are different reasons why these countries decided to take this step. In 1808, Spanish colonies stretched from the Pacific to the Caribbean, but it was almost all gone in 1825. What happened? Why? How could this empire fall apart so fast and completely? The answer to these questions is complicated and long, but there are some important aspects that can help you find the right one. You should get more information about the main causes of Latin American independence.

First of all, there was no respect for creoles, and these colonies had their thriving class, but Spain kept appointing native-born Spaniards to the most important positions in colonial administrations. This is what irritated creoles who felt that they’re ignored.

Another significant reason that contributed to the independence of these colonies is the absence of free trade. They produced a wide range of valuable goods, such as cacao, coffee, wine, textiles, and minerals, etc. However, they were allowed to trade only with Spain, and their trading rates were beneficial only for Spanish merchants. That’s why many Latin Americans preferred to sell their goods illegally to American and British merchants because they simply wanted to earn more money. This is how Spain was eventually forced to loosen its strict trade restrictions, but its moves were too small and too late because those people who produced important goods demanded fair prices for them.

Don’t overlook the impact of other revolutions because Spanish America could see their examples and results. Some of them were positive, such as the American Revolution that was seen as the best example of colonies fighting for their independence and developing a more democratic and fair society. However, other revolutions were negative, such as the Haitian Revolution, and that’s why many people were afraid that Spain wouldn’t be able to protect them from similar situations.

Probably, one of the main causes of Latin American independence is that Spain was weak so that its ability to control all colonies lessened. You shouldn’t overlook a growing sense in these colonies of being quite different from Spain, and these differences were mostly cultural. All of these important factors contributed to the desire of Spanish colonist in Latin America to fight for their independence.
