Beowulf's Three Battles against Evil

Perhaps, you are already aware of the fact that our human life has several archetypal patterns. These patterns keep reoccurring and become familiar to folks through all ages as well as ethnicities. Throughout history, a limited number of literary works have managed to captivate people by incorporating these patterns. A typical example of these literary works is Beowulf.

The poem rolls out a story of Beowulf, a legendary warrior, used to fighting evils throughout his life. It boasts strong elements Anglo-Saxon bravery culture, religious tenets and true strength. The poem boasts universal appeal mostly because of its elements of characterization, theme and plot, which prove timeless.

Beowulf’s portrayal of human nature appears to be eternal. Before entering any battle Beowulf is used to listing his accomplishments. He tells that he has no rivals in terms of swimming, fighting and son. He’s not afraid of numerous monsters crowded around him and attacking him all the time. He even boasts to treat them politely, offering them the edge of his razor-sharp sword. However, all these boasts are pure symbolic and they even point out to his personal insecurity. Indeed, Beowulf seems scared of failure and defeat. Respectively, these boastful remarks simply remind him of his own invincibility. Feeling insecure, Beowulf appears to be an accurate representation of human nature.

In this epic poem, the major personage Beowulf underwent up to three battles, where he fought respectively Grendel’s, Grendel’s mom and a dragon. We should stress that Beowulf wasn’t able to beat any of those three counterparts with any type of available weapons. When he fought Grendel, his soldiers tried to have Grendel wounded, but none of their weapons did any harm to that mighty creature. As a result, Beowulf had to get down close combat, using his bare hands. Beowulf managed to tear off Grendel's arm. He sent this creature back to his swamp to die.

During the second battle against Grendel’s mother, Beowulf made an attempt to kill her by means of a sacred sword, but this weapon which did her no harm. Grendel’s mother almost defeated Beowulf, but he managed to regain this strength and kill her.

In the third, final battle, Beowulf’s shield melted from the dragon’s fire and his sword broke when he tried to strike that creature. The given battle appeared to be unhappy. Beowulf died of wounds. In all these three battles Beowulf had to fight along.
