The Role of Hallucinations in Macbeth

For people interested in this famous play, it’s worth mentioning that the hallucinations seen by Macbeth and his wife throughout the whole tragedy are symbolic of their guilt for taking part in bloodshed to fulfill their personal ambitions.

The first hallucination that Macbeth sees is a floating dagger right before he decides to kill Duncan. His wife, Lady Macbeth, hallucinates the blood on her hands that she can’t wash away. These well-known characters see all of these visions and supernatural signs as their guilt as the plot keeps progressing. It’s interesting that Shakespeare leaves hallucinations up to being interpreted as to whether they are real or just imagined within the minds of this couple.

Their ephemeral visions signify the war of Macbeth within himself because his honor fights with ambitions. When he hears the voice that tells him that murders never sleep, it also foretells the sleepwalking of Lady Macbeth and the nightmares of Macbeth about murdering his good friends.

The blood is seen both real and imagined, and this is what symbolizes their guilt. In the beginning of this famous tragedy, the Scots ward off the Norwegians in real battles with different casualties. After imagining a bloody dagger after the death of Duncan, the main character wonders whether the ocean will be enough to wash away his sin. In the end, his wife imagines the blood on her hands and she keeps saying that it’s a damned spot. She also hallucinates during her sleep as her psyche does everything possible to wash away her guilt.

The hallucinations and visions of Macbeth allow the audience to get a better insight into the mind of this tragic character. Besides, he also sees Banquo’s ghost after hiring people to kill him and his son who manages to escape. Later, he is visited by 3 apparitions too. Macbeth can’t help himself because he is hypnotized by visions that lead him into a death chamber against the will.

Before seeing Banquo’s ghost, Macbeth becomes paranoid because he keeps asking whether Banquo is dead. He is the only one who can see this ghost, and this is what leads many critics to think that it’s not real so that it’s all about a delusion or manifestation of his evil mind and fears. It’s true that his guilt completely paralyzed and overwhelmed him. Finally, the author uses the appearance of this ghost as an effective tool to show readers Macbeth’s mental turmoil, and it serves its purpose very well.
