Taking a Stand - A Man for All Seasons

After reading A Man for All Seasons written by Robert Bolt, you will learn the story of Thomas More, a man who dies because he just can’t compromise integrity, but not because he wants to be a hero or achieve other goals and his character is not common for many readers. Let’s take a look at its plot in detail.

This play written by Robert Bolt tells people the story of Thomas More, thus allowing them to identify his important qualities and traits. Throughout his life, he was quite an orthodox Catholic so that he always puts God before everything, and this is what leads to his death in the end. There are many people who agree that More is a hero of this society, and it’s easy to see that via his regard for laws, defiance toward the king, and multiple attacks on ethics.

Pay attention to his trust in laws because it complements his belief in the society. His desperate sheltering beneath different law forms is his personal determination to stay within the shelter of the society. However, it shuts him out because of his views on laws that conflict their own ones.

In the eyes of many people, including his good friends and the king, the only thing that More has to do is putting his hand on the Bible to go against his key beliefs, but it’s quite a serious thing to do for him. He thinks that the oath is a specific invitation to God to start acting as a witness and a judge. When he is doing that, it’s impossible to lie to others, and that’s why the main character decides to refuse and stick to God’s laws. This is what provides More with enough strength to remain brave and heroic to stand up to the society. He does his best to stick to the law, but this action costs him the office and important privileges, thus leading him to poverty. More thinks that these are only minor set-backs because he still believes that everything will be rewarded by God so that he keeps living his life accordingly to this belief.

In addition, it’s also worth analyzing a relationship between Alice and More. You should compare those scenes where they appear to find out more about the examples of their affection, dramatic effects, and pathos. It’s evident that they are two completely different persons, and that’s why they often argue and have different opinions on many matters. In the end of this famous play, Alice starts understanding the main reasoning behind his incentive to go against the society and why he thinks that it’s important, but their relationship is still defined as problematic.
