The Story of the Cook Family

Navigator James Cook is one of the most famous explorers of the oceans of the 18th century. He made three round the world sea voyages, during which the maps of little-known and rarely visited parts of Newfoundland and the east coast of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the west coast of North America, the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans were drawn.

James Cook was born on October 27, 1728 in the English village of Marton. His father was a simple laborer and the breadwinner of a large family.

In 1736, his family moved to the village of Great Ayton, where Cook started attending the local school. After five years of study, he began working on the farm under the supervision of his father, who by the time received the position of a supervisor. At the age of eighteen, Cook was hired as a cabin boy on a merchant brig-collier Hercules. That was the moment when the marine life of James Cook began.

Cook began to sail the coastal ships transporting coal along the coasts of England and Ireland. He liked the sea life and became a good sailor. After some time he became a skipper and soon was hired in the military 60-gun ship Egl.

James attracted the attention of the officers to himself. He was disciplined, smart and knew the ship’s business, so he was appointed as a boatswain. In the future, on the research vessels he was assigned to perform hydrographic work.

When the British government in 1768 decided to send a scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean, the choice fell on the famous hydrographer, Alexander Dalrymple. But due to his high demands, the Admiralty refused his services.

Among other proposed candidates was an experienced sailor James Cook. He led a three-masted sailing ship Endeavour for the search of new lands. At the time he was 40 years old. Cook’s first trip lasted from 1768 to 1771. His team consisted of 80 people.

Cook had a secret mission – to find a southern continent, which was presumed on the other side of the Earth.

The discovery happened on August 26, 1768. After that, Cook discovered New Zealand and was able to go to the east coast of Australia. The second expedition took place in 1772 and was completed in 1775. In the second expedition, Cook opened the island of New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, South Sandwich Islands.

The third voyage around the globe began in 1776 and lasted for almost 3 years. This time, Cook was looking for new lands in the northwestern Pacific and wanted to find a passage around North America.

In 1778, he opened the Hawaiian Islands and reached the Bering Strait February. On February 14, 1779 50-year-old Captain James Cook was killed by residents of Hawaii in an open clash due to theft with his vessel.
