Just a few words about the Gilded six bits

Perhaps, you’ve already heard of "The Gilded Six-Bits" by Zora Neale Hurston. The world firstly saw this concise story the same year, the United States cancelled the gold standard and Franklin Roosevelt asked Americans to exchange their gold for paper money and silver. In fact, the type of money was crucial in this story, it actually personifies the character Otis D. Slemmons as possessing gold money.

The given story explores a great number of themes, such as the difference between fantasy and reality, conflicting cultural values, marriage, love, infidelity, forgiveness, jealousy, not to mention the growing importance of subtle changes during an economic downtime. It’s quite tempting to lead this story as it covers the everlasting power of love as well as the crucial role of paternity. The author makes it clear that Missie May is still in love with Joe, however he just gets back to playful rituals, characterizing their earlier relationship. Until Joe is sure that Missie May isn’t bearing another man’s kid, he can’t effect a complete reconciliation with this woman or accept the kid. Joe’s necessity to establish the kid’s paternity appears to be a powerful emotional imperative. The problem is that Joe doesn’t believe that Missie May is his true wife, until he knows her kid is his offspring.

If you’re particularly interested in paternity’s major role, then you should definitely familiarize yourself with this story. The author creates an excellent case for paternity’s major role in this story. Saunders explains Joe’s sincere doubt as for the baby’s father. However, the desire to protect his own genetic line and May’s affair with Slemmons can hardly be Joe’s number one concern. Furthermore, this sounds weird, but Joe’s action can’t be even explained by male sexual jealousy.

Joe feels betrayed and hurt by the loved woman. However, just betrayal is the core of the problem. Exactly fatherhood is what Joe thinks about day and night. After a year of marriage, Joe is overwhelmed with the idea of to have a child. Unfortunately, his sweat dream was ruined by the discovery of Missie May in bed with Slemmons. Later he stays with her, though due to inability to protect his precious genetic line Joe becomes sexually and emotionally distant.

Zora Neale Hurston dramatizes his theme by simply portraying that objects are covered in order to make them better than they really are, and that can be seen with the gilded half-greenback. The author conveys that marriage is just a kind of prostitution, its disguised form.
