Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies, philosophical novel-parable, by William Golding was first published in 1954. Simple story, realistic images of children, mentally-tested characters reasons of characters’ acts, and exotic location merged in the novel in a terrible dystopia, showing the brutality of the human race.

In the novel, Golding showed not specific ideas characteristic to a certain time, but the timeless essence of human nature – sinful and terrible that descends to the most brutal crimes in the absence of a positive deterrent.

The plot of the novel is a meeting of Ralph and Piggy. After the crash the boys are trying to understand what happened to them and identify solutions to the problem. At first, they try to keep cultural and civilizational foundations of the country on the island.

Boys set the rules, the most important of which is the constant maintenance of a smoking fire. Fire in the novel becomes a symbol of life – it is the hope of salvation. Children build huts and find a secluded place for the restroom. Older boys help kids get fruits from tall trees. Life on the island seems near-perfect: a twelve-year-old Ralph thinks of a new way of life without adults as a fairy tale, a kind of idyll, in which all is well.

Everything changes with the first blood. As soon as Jack finds his ability to kill a pig, hunting for fun turns into a way of life. Following their leader, former choristers change beyond recognition: they put on face bloodthirsty masks and are totally given to lust for murder. The feeling of self-importance and power overshadows everything, including the desire to return to the familiar world of people. The hunters transform into a wild tribe, led by the Leader, whose orders they implicitly execute.

The image of the Beast in the novel corresponds to the image of the Devil. Initially, the Beast appears in the nightmares of kids who see it as a snake. An optimistic Ralph believes Beast is fiction, Piggy denies its existence, relying on scientific knowledge of the world, while the rest of the boys fear of who might kill them, not knowing that, first of all, they need to be afraid of themselves. Only one boy realizes that – Simon.

The whole Beast consists of a set of small animals represented by feral hunters: starting with the destruction of pigs, they end up killing a boy.

Ralph, Piggy and the twins, Eric and Sam, have become unwitting witnesses and possibly members of Simon’s murder. They are so shocked by what had happened that they are trying to pretend that it didn’t happen. Subsequent murder of Piggy and baiting of Ralph are the culmination of the novel. Finally children release their inner Beast and stop only when a British officer land on the island. The officer becomes a prototype of the highest divine principle that stops all disputes and quarrels, and defeats the devil.
