The Life of Elaine Risley

Cat’s Eye is a famous novel of Margaret Atwood, and it described the life of its protagonist, Elaine Risley. She is a well-known artist who stages her retrospective exhibition that provides her with a unique chance to remember her past and life stories.

However, this kind of search turns out to be a bit problematic because of the trauma associated with her childhood years in Toronto in addition to her wish to escape from the persecution of her so-called friends. As a result, Risley seems to be in perpetual fights being unable to find the right sense of well-being and her contentment.

Her paintings deserve your attention because they are important mirrors to her past. Besides, they symbolize her ambivalent and contradictory relationships that result in Elaine’s infinite displacement instead of her fulfillment. The main character realizes that the identity can’t be grasped as a whole because it comes fractured in different personalities that are the aspects of her problematic self.

Don’t forget about the message of Stephen because it’s important to Elaine’s sense of self-evaluation. That’s why a fluid sense of space and time pervades this interesting novel, and the narrator combines the past and the present, just like some weird puzzle.

The adult and childhood memories of Risley are both disjointed and continuous. This means that some of them are buried, while others are elongated. It’s the main reason why she often sees herself as 2 personalities who interact in both contradictory and complementary ways.

Take into account that a big part of her trauma is resulted by her early school experiences in her hometown where her family settled when she was only 8 years old. At the very beginning, Elaine positions herself as weak and submissive because of specific difficulties and differences that she encounters when conforming to existing feminine stereotypes. Another prominent fact is that her unconventional upbringing combined with her nomadic lifestyle influenced her through her family, including a brother, a father, and a carefree mother who is not interested in cooking and other house tasks. Her mother didn’t do anything to prepare her daughter for here further socialization.

When Elaine starts going to school in Toronto, she has no idea of the true meaning of being feminine so that she feels awkward around other girls. Later, she often associated her main fears with them, despite the fact that she always tries to please her friends, but they become her offenders.
