The Best Report on A Separate Peace

Interested in reading A Separate Peace? Then you should know that this famous novel was written by John Knowles more than fifty years ago. Its narrator is Gene Forrester who tells readers a story while revisiting a high school campus and recalling those events that took place 15 years earlier.

Gene speaks in the 1st person in this book and describes the events as he remembered them at the time when they happened. Occasionally, he includes his augmented knowledge too, and this is what helps readers differentiate older Gene and the younger one. It’s true that he recounts different external events with thoroughness and honesty, but you should admit that Forrester is an unreliable narrator when it comes to his personal emotions and thoughts about specific scenes, including Finny’s fall.

The tone of A Separate Peace is a bit nostalgic while being quite melancholy and brooding. The narrator refers to the past before launching into flashbacks and the whole story ends with returning to the recent past. Events take place in New England academic in 1958, but then it flashes back to the beginning of the 40s.

What is a major conflict? Gene Forrester feels both hate and love for the best friend, Finny, because he worships his moral and athletic superiorities. The rising action of this story is his growing envy to Finny’s success because this character realized that Finny won’t return his resentment. That’s why Gene is jealous and envious and feels that Finny becomes a morally superior individual.

Everything starts when Finny suggests his best friend to climb a tree together. As a result, Finny falls and shatters his leg, while Gene jounces a tree limb so that he feels guilty about his friend’s fall, but they become more intimate and develop their codependency. Boys put the main character on trial for this accident, but Finny falls down stairs and ends up breaking his leg once again. Unfortunately, he died during a surgical operation on this injured leg.

There are many important themes developed by the author in A Separate Peace, including the creation of people’s inner enemies, the threat to their identities, codependency, etc. The main motifs that are described in this book include athletics and transformation, while its key symbols are WWII and Finny’s fall. Finally, older Gene makes his references to a death by violence and those fears that he had in school, such as marble steps and a tree, which are associated with his best friend and unfortunate accidents.
