Main differences of the Classroom of America

The Classroom of America differs not only from its far colleagues, but also from the nearest too. For example, American classroom environment is very different to what UK students are accustomed to. One of the main aspects of it is the emphasis on student participation. That is why a part of the student’s final mark depends on his or her attendance and participation. American professors ask for two types of participation – voluntary and involuntary. First one is when professor raised the question to the class and everyone can respond to it. Second one is when professor calls a student to respond on a question.

Comparing to Chinese classroom, there will differences in such things:

  • Relationships between students and their professors/instructors
  • Classroom participation types
  • The exams.

In China students trained to obey all the teachers instructions. In this country teaching career is one of the most respected. Even if some student has his or her own opinion about the subject, the instructor’s opinion is the only correct for the exams. Still, instructor can give the time for students to share their own opinions, but they will be incorrect for the exams if they do not match the instructor’s opinion about some specific topic. Students in China have to nod or bow when saying hello to their teachers; this rule work also if they meet some faculty member (this is the requirement of the Chinesepropriety). Comparing to the US classroom, the atmosphere in Chinese classroom differs a lot. In the US professors encourage students to have their own opinions. One of the most valuable qualities for students in the US is self-creativity or self-search. While in China it may be considered rude to call your teacher by first name, in the US it is very common.

US teachers encourage participation in their classes. Good lesson is when many students enjoyed the discussion. In Chinese classroom the situation and requirements are opposite to that. However, it is absolutely normal when students keep silence during whole lesson, because they are trained to keep their own opinions with them. The US and Chinese classroom have very different purposes. In the US students are successful when they trying to combine knowledge, do creative search and etcetera. Vice versa, Chinese students need to learn exactly what teacher says and paste that on the exam. Besides, you won’t see too many open questions in Chinese tests.
