The Biography of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson is an American philosopher, one of the greatest US thinkers, writer, poet, essayist, leader of transcendentalism, and the first who formulated its system of ideas.

Emerson was born in Boston in 1803. His father was a pastor of the Unitarian Church, and Ralph intended to follow his footsteps, graduating from the first seminary, and in 1821 – Harvard University. Being the holder of theological education, Ralph became a priest and preached in the Boston community of Unitarians.

He left the parish at his own wish. Since then, his life has been connected with public lectures, writing magazine articles and works of art. Lecturing was the main source of income for him. After the marriage Emerson moved to Concord (MA). At the same time he was lecturing in Canada and Europe. Periodically he was proofreading his own lectures and released them as collections. In 1844, he released his Essays.

In 1836, Ralph’s first book was published – Nature, which was outlining the philosophy of transcendentalism. The basis of this theory was a number of provisions of a philosophical system of Immanuel Kant. The same year in Boston, a fan club of literary and philosophical transcendentalism was organized. In 1840, about 100 followers of this movement led by Emerson founded a colony of Brook Farm.

Exploring the phenomenon of contemporary life, Emerson in the final period of his work worked on the book Society Alone. In 1876, he published a collection of lectures Literature and Social Problems. On April 27, 1882, Ralph died in Concord. After his death, his Diaries were made available to the public.

Emerson was the greatest representative of transcendental individualism. His ideas proclaimed the sovereignty of the ‘I’ of each person. Ralph taught about personal autonomy, endowed all human beings with equal abilities that needed only one thing – the creation of conditions for free development. Representatives of contemporary liberal currents thought of Emerson as their spiritual leader. His ideas have had an enormous influence on American social thought and philosophical literature.
