Democrats V. Republicans: The Never Ending Confrontation

The political spectrum is broad and diverse, which allows people to better classify their own preferences when it comes to the administration of government. Regardless of it, the first thing that crosses one’s mind when thinking about political beliefs is the clear division between the democratic and republican party.

The positions of these two major parties differ a lot. Democrats tend to be more liberal on social issues, while the Republicans prefer sticking to conservative values. For example, the Republicans oppose gay marriages and abortions, whereas Democrats show more of a pro-choice position regarding both. Some other social issues where the opinions of people standing by mentioned above parties differ include the right to bear arms, capital punishment, and healthcare.

Yet, the liberal and conservative analogy doesn’t work when it comes to economic issues. The Republicans believe that the governmental intervention into country’s economy only impedes the development of the market. They think that private businesses need more freedom in order to encourage the growth of capitalism. Meanwhile, the Democrats believe that giving excessive power to businesses may lead to inequality and eventually to dictatorship. The Republicans believe that minimum wages are to be set by the free market considering the current market environment, however, the Democrats are more interested in protecting the rights of human resources, and they think that minimum wages need to be increased.

Speaking about foreign policy, the two parties seem to not be finding any consensus as well. While they agree on the idea of establishing partnership relations with other countries and helping out those in need, the nature of the “help” is always a matter of dispute. One of the important sections of the Republican campaign is the enlargement of the budget for military spendings. The Democrats think that it is a money misappropriation and argue that such policy encourages the hostilities.

Out of all countries, the two major parties have shaped the U.S. the most. The history of American republicans and democrats goes back to the 19th century. Since then, the representatives of both parties have been assigned to the position of the President. Among the famous republican presidents, one can’t but mention Abraham Lincoln and Richard Nixon. Likewise, John F. Kennedy and the current president Barack Obama are among the influential democrats.
