Film Industry Evolution

The history of American cinema began almost simultaneously with the birth and formation of film. Thomas Edison is one of the prominent figures of the time, was an American, and created his first studio in the United States. It was a small hut in which there were only two rooms.

Edison was not only a talented inventor, and entrepreneur, he was the first to have an idea to use film industry as an income. In the early years of the 20th century, many little studios were working in the United States. Movies were filmed in the most primitive way, and directors were highly dependent on the weather, sun colors and the environment.

In those days, Los Angeles was considered a backwater, and Hollywood was an ordinary rural suburb. However, here, the sun was shining almost every year, and natural beauty was perfect for shooting of spectacular scenes.

The date of the start of production of films in Los Angeles is considered to be 1907. In 1913, the first Hollywood film came out – The Squaw Man by Cecil B. DeMille. This event is considered to be a reference point in the history of Hollywood. In the future, the film industry in this area has developed rapidly, and after 15 years in this place, there were many film studios.

At first, the movies were silent then the sound appeared. Already in 1926, Warner Brothers released a few sound films consisting mainly of musical numbers, but they were not popular with the audience. Success came only with the film The Jazz Singer, which in addition to musical numbers had brief remarks by Al Jolson. The premiere date of the movie is considered the birth of the first sound film.

Although the first primitive color film was released in 1922, it failed to impress the audience. The first full color short film La Cucaracha was released in 1934. The first feature-length color film Becky Sharp by American director of Armenian origin, Ruben Mamulyan, was released in 1935. This year is considered to be the year of the appearance of color film.

In the 1950s, technological progress has gone even further. Development and implementation of a magnetic recording and playback, as well as the creation and development of new kinds of cinema (panoramic, stereoscopic, multiscreen, and others) led to a significant improvement of the quality of films. The so-called effect, presence of a viewer, appeared. The impression was enhanced with stereo sound reproduction that created spatial sound future, when a sound follows the image of the source, causing the illusion of the reality of the sound source.

Today, there are many sophisticated systems of sound in cinema. The number of individual audio channels comes to 7 and in some systems even to 12. Of course, all designed to enhance the depth of the viewer’s immersion in the atmosphere of a movie.
