Body Modification and Contempo

Of course, body modification exists in the form of tattoos, piercings, scarification, etc. Wild tribes used them to indicate their belonging to a particular tribal group. Such procedures were of a ritual character. Arabs and Polynesians gave modifications a magical meaning.

Today, people make various body modifications for the purpose of decoration with some modifications being accepted and not going beyond the norm, such as the wearing of earrings in ears. There are also modifications that take place within the framework of medical treatment, like surgeries optimizing the body’s functioning and elimination of some appearance defects, as wearing braces on teeth.

However, there are body modifications that fall under the criteria of deviance: the apparent discrepancy of ethnic and cultural traditions, contradiction to age norms of socialization, damage to the individual, punishable behavior by society.

Thus, body modifications can be divided into two conditional groups: acceptable and not acceptable. The first group includes historically established modifications that are recognized in a modern society. The second group is painful and extreme modifications performed by the above-described groups of people. Modifications can be interpreted as a variety of methods and forms of modification of the body through the skin damage (scarification, cuts, piercing, branding, tattooing large areas of skin, amputations and other surgical procedures) that take place with consent of the person, by themselves or with the help of specialists in body modification. All these are done to achieve aesthetic, psychological, ideological, or spiritual goals.

There is a view that people compensate their inferiority in various forms of deviant and victim behavior. Body modifications, i.e., self-harm and self-destructive behavior are varieties of active type of victim behavior. This behavior is associated with self-destructive pattern, which, according to scientists, is formed at an early age.

Causes of body modifications lie in the inner feelings of the person. They are diverse: the problem of self-control, lack of motivation, a tendency to escape from reality, a low level of consciousness, lack of reflection, avoidance of activities, low self-esteem to the rejection of the image of I, a distorted body image, dissatisfaction with the status, inadequate self-esteem, etc.

Even though body modification procedures are quite painful, people do them, thinking to compensate a brief pain by the effect their modified body will have on people.
