The Threat of Anne Hutchinson

The most important thing that Anne Hutchinson did is challenging the traditional role of women in the society, and she achieved this goal through her opposing religious beliefs. Basically, she was one of those women who had their own thoughts and the first one to act on them.

Anne Hutchinson was born in 1591 in England and she was the daughter of the man who claimed that many ordained ministers were unfit to guide people and their souls. Unfortunately, he was put in jail for 1 year for this act of defiance, but his influence had a great impact on Anne and her character. She read his books on such important topics as religion and theology. A lot of her willingness to speak out and independence was due to the example of her father. She admired him for his defiance of traditional concepts and principles of churches.

In 1612, she married William Hutchinson, and you may be surprised to learn that they had fifteen kids together. This couple relocated to Boston, and this is where Anne started to hold her informal church meetings at home and discussing the services of pastors while preaching her innovative beliefs to many followers.

The clergy was threatened by these meetings so that Hutchinson was charged with heresey. Hutchinson had a small hope that many people would speak in her defense because she was an outspoken female in the male society and hierarchy. In 1636, Anna was charged with charged with heresey again and banished. A few years later, she had to relocate to New York where she was killed in an accidental Indian attack.

How did she challenged and threatened the Puritan clergy and society? Basically, Anne believed that people could feel their salvation and they were filled with God’s spirit after conversion. She also claimed that people didn’t have to learn according to Puritan writers and the Bible to save their souls. All ministers were under the covenant of works, and the inner light was a true guarantee of people’s salvation. Besides, Anne Hutchinson said that the key responsibility for salvation was placed on Christ and each individual had God’s ears.

In conclusion, he was against the assumption that all women needed to do in their time because she decided to hold meetings in her house to share her views and innovative beliefs, but many people were against them. This is what made her a real threat even in the Bay colony where she had to stay because Anne was quite dangerous and influential. Her personality is an example of women’s struggle.

The most important thing that Anne Hutchinson did is challenging the traditional role of women in the society, and she achieved this goal through her opposing religious beliefs. Basically, she was one of those women who had their own thoughts and the first one to act on them.
