Types A and B of Influenza

Influenza is an acute, serious disease caused by a viral infection. The influenza virus enters the group of SARS (severe respiratory viral infections), but because of the severity of it, as a rule, is considered separately. Influenza infects the upper respiratory tract, trachea, bronchi, and sometimes the lungs, causing a running nose, cough, morning sickness. The disease can lead to serious complications and even death. The biggest danger is for those with weakened immune system. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses, suffer the influenza especially hard.

According to the frequency and the number of influenza and SARS diseases, influenza is first in the world, accounting for 95% of all infectious diseases. The death rate from this disease remains high – each year 2 million people in the world die from the flu.

In most cases of influenza, the illness is caused by the influenza virus types A, B, C.

Influenza virus of an A type is dangerous for humans and animals, causing a moderate or severe epidemics. Virus is inherent to each type of animal that does not spread to other species: as a rule, the birds’ virus infects only birds and pigs cannot get sick from it, and vice versa. But since this type of a virus is constantly changing, there is a great danger for people.

Virus A2 spreads among people who are already infected.

There are several subtypes of type A that are classified by the surface antigens – hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, such as H1, H5, H7 and H9. At the moment, there are 16 types of hemagglutinin and 9 neuraminidase types. H5 and H7 are deadly.

The recent outbreak of influenza A (H1N1), bird flu terrified health professionals and society in general, and these disturbances are not in vain, since more than half of the people infected with H5N1 died. To date, most cases of H5N1 infections are registered in Asian countries among people in close contact with birds on farms. It is transmitted through the airborne dust and contact ways, including by eating insufficiently roasted bird.

Another subtype of virus type A is H1N, pig flu transmitted by contact with sick animals, from person to person by airborne droplets, as well as by eating meat without sufficient heat treatment.

Influenza of a virus type B is distributed only among the people, and causes less severe reaction than type A, almost not causing severe epidemics. However, like the virus type A, it can change its antigenic structure.

The most harmless type of influenza virus is C. It does not cause severe symptoms and epidemic. It infects only humans. It contains one surface antigen and 7 nucleic acid fragments. Symptoms of the illness are usually light, or do not appear at all.
