Schools and Mandatory Physical Education

When it comes to mandatory physical education classes at school, there are certain pros and cons associated with them, but the health benefits they provide definitely outweigh different considerations. Nowadays, obesity is a huge problem even for teenagers and kids, and that’s why these classes are viewed as the necessary requirements by school administrators and adults. Without mandatory physical education, some students may decide to ignore physical activities completely and focus on their sedentary pursuits.

Physical classes help students develop their proper exercise habits that lead to healthier lifestyles. According to relevant studies, healthy exercises can help teenagers prevent obesity and other unwanted medical conditions, including cancer, heart issues, osteoporosis, diabetes, etc. Normal schools days require them to take part in sedentary activities, and that’s why mandatory physical education is important to force them to stay active. This is how they exercise, tone up their muscles, burn calories, decrease stress levels, and boost their physical health.

These courses encourage youngsters to lead a healthier lifestyle. Those people who exercise regularly during their adolescence and childhood are more likely to stay active during their adulthood. Without mandatory physical classes, students may not want to exercise because of their self-indulgence or laziness. If they fail to exercise as students, it will be hard for them to develop healthy habits and self-discipline as adults. Besides, they may want to avoid future physical activities if they lack fitness, and this is what leads to physical limitations, especially if they see peers in a better shape.

Physical education classes include sports, fitness training, and games that may result in physical injuries so that there are certain liability risks involved. Those students who don’t have enough athletic skills may not be able to defend themselves against stronger athletes. Weak, obese, or uncoordinated teenagers may get bullied by athletic students or hurt themselves while exercising. Even strong and healthy kids are at risk of having unwanted injuries. Although they may receive the same injuries on playgrounds, they have an option to choose because this activity is not mandatory, unlike physical education at school. Finally, it can be a bit disadvantageous for those teens who have to meet quite strict academic requirements because of time limitations.
