Medicinal Plants of India

Historically, all medicinal preparations were made from plants, whether in their simple or complex forms of different mixtures and extracts. Nowadays, there are many meds that are developed from plants, especially in India. Another prominent fact is that most of them involve the isolation of those active ingredients that are found in given medicinal plants and its modification. Keep in mind that semi-synthetic analogues of these compounds are quite useful as a pharmaceutical product.

Many of these drugs were discovered with the help of botanical and ethnic knowledge of the traditional plant uses. Those pharmaceutical companies that produce such meds apply for some sort of intellectual property protection or a patent. If granted, this document provides these companies with the unique right to prevent others from selling and producing the same product. This means that they get their commercial monopoly.

Besides, the source of this kind of knowledge is not mentioned so that both a financial reward and a product go to a given company, while the country from which it was obtained is just a source of raw materials, including biological resources and knowledge. That’s why some activists invented the term bio-piracy, which is a huge problem in many developing countries these days.

The vast knowledge base of such countries as India in healthcare and medicinal plants resulted in the keen interest of many pharmaceutical companies that want to use it as their resource for researching and developing special programs targeted at discovering and manufacturing new effective medications. That’s why India and other similar countries are faced with a particular dilemma. There is a certain desire to share important knowledge and biological resources, especially when it comes to medicinal plants, but different communities may have varying conditions to impart it. Don’t forget about a natural desire to get some return, which includes not only benefits, both non-financial and financial, but also acknowledgement and credit for the contribution to final pharmaceutical products.

Finally, existing intellectual property laws don’t protect this kind of knowledge adequately and effective enough. That’s why India must consider important legislative and other basic measures that will help it protect its relevant rights in terms of medicinal plants. There are many of them found in this country, and this is what makes it so attractive to pharmaceutical companies.
