Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt

Homecoming written by Cynthia Voigt is an exceptionally touching young adult novel. It is one of the parts of the Tillerman Cycle, which is a series of stories for children. Homecoming, in particular, is considered to be one of the most valuable and upstanding narratives within the collection.

The novel touches one of the most painful topics concerning family relationships — the one that has to do with insufficient parents taking care of their children. The story starts with a Tillerman family, of a mother and four children, parking near a shopping mall, but the plot twists once the mom abandons the kids by leaving the car and never coming back. She, however, left her oldest child — the thirteen-year-old Dicey — to be in charge in case something happens. This is why, when the realization of what happened comes to the girl, she decides to take actions. Initially, the family arrived in Connecticut to meet their aunt whom no one among the kids has ever seen. Presuming that their aunt’s house should be somewhere not far away and that the mom must have gone there, Dicey, along with her siblings James, Maybeth and Sammy, are taking the risk of going out there on themselves in order to find their mom.

Dangerous and unpredictable adventures follow the kids along their journey. Having little money, they eventually are left with no funds to keep on moving. Yet, on their way they get to meet some nice people who are willing to help the children. In the course of time, they get to their aunt’s house. However, they do not find their mom there, neither do they find their aunt. It appears that she has recently passed away, and her daughter Eunice is now living in the building. They stay there with her.

Later, Dicey is to be the one who initiates the escape. Living with a devout Catholic Eunice appears to be not much appealing to any of the kids. They decide to move further, to Maryland, in order to find their grandmother. Once they do, the grandma seems to show little interest in sheltering her grandchildren. Yet, the kids find a way to her heart and at the end she lets them stay with her.

The novel is written in a very simple and easy to understand language, yet it addresses quite complex issues. Along the way that the Tillerman kids pass, there are many understatements to be found regarding the fate of children that are left by their own parents, the parents that struggle to uplift them in the first place, and the society’s judgment towards both adults and kids in this situation.
