The Question of Euthanasia Being Humanness or Non-Humanness

Euthanasia is termination of life of a terminally ill person, who greatly suffers from his or her state at his or her request or request from their relatives. Euthanasia is true only in the case when the purpose of action is to bring death. In case, if doctors prescribe therapy that relieves the state of the dying, but leads to death, is not euthanasia.

Modern theorists, who study the question of whether euthanasia is the norm in today’s society, divide this phenomenon in two types. Passive euthanasia is stop of the patient’s treatment by the doctor, or supportive therapy that allows to extend the life (and suffering) of the patient, sometimes with no chance of recovery. Active euthanasia is committing suicide with medical assistance (for example, when the doctor gives the patient medication at his or her request to cease their life). In addition, euthanasia is often divided into voluntary (when the patient expresses a desire to die, or pre-stated and legally assured such a desire in case of unconsciousness) and involuntary (where euthanasia is carried out without the direct consent of the patient, if they are in unconscious state to address family).

It would seem that a person has the right to decide whether to end life, if there are no prospects for survival and suffering is very strong, however, this approach may be fundamentally wrong.

Firstly, the concept of death in recent decades has changed its meaning. If before the death was considered the cessation of the heart, lungs, now medicine intervenes in the deeper processes of the existence of the human body and the death is called the death of the brain.

Secondly, the term of terminal patients has undergone changes, as modern medicine continues to evolve, and those diseases that were previously considered absolutely incurable, today have their perspective treatment.

Thirdly, it is very difficult to justify euthanasia from a legal point of view, a clear definition of the concept of easy death.

However, some countries have already given their answer to the difficult question of whether euthanasia is the norm in today’s human society by legalizing this phenomenon, for example, the Netherlands, Australia, and some US states.

The complexity of this issue should be duly noted, as often happens, the doctors give patients wrong diagnosis. And what will happen in the event that this precedent will push some of the doctors who had no conscience to unlawful or violent steps towards patients? However, another question is: is it humane and to prolong the life of a person, who in advance is doomed to intense physical suffering, pain, and death from an incurable disease? The problem is extremely complex in the world.

Thinking about whether euthanasia is a natural choice of every person, a norm in the modern human society, everyone should understand all the pros and cons, because it concerns everyone.
