My Summers on Prince Edward Island

If you are going to visit and relax in the Atlantic provinces of Canada, the Prince Edward Island is the right choice. No wonder this place is considered to be the most ancient and sophisticated Victorian place in Canada.

Here, everything is steeped in history. This is no accident. The capital of the province, the city of Charlottetown, is the birth place of Canada, because the conference here in 1864 has led to the creation of a new country three years later.

If you look at the ethnic composition of the population of Prince Edward Island, you will see that the majority of the population is descendants of the Scots and the Irish, 15% of the population is the descendants of the French, and a small part of the Mi’kmaq Indians living on Lennox Island.

After I visited the island in summer I saw that the Prince Edward Island is not by chance called the garden province of Canada. When you travel around the island, it seems that there are a lot of famous landscape schools here – there are so many gardens and parks. And the most important thing is not even their presence, but how elegant and refined they look.

Most likely, travelers who prefer quiet and peaceful holiday, like me, will enjoy the island the most. Cycling enthusiasts will certainly find it interesting, since there are about 250 km of bike paths that run along the most picturesque places of the province.

The island doesn’t have any industry and it is very similar to a reserve. To reach it by land, you will need to use the Confederation Bridge, built in 1997. This 13-kilometer-long bridge is one of the longest in the world.

From Borden Carleton a Trans Canadian Highway runs through the picturesque hills and red rocks to the central area of the island –Charlotte's Shore. Here you’ll get a beautiful view of the capital of the Island – Charlottetown.

The city is considered to be not only political, but also the cultural center of the province. In 1964, during the visit of Queen Elizabeth, the Center of Arts was opened in Charlottetown that immortalizes the memory of the establishment of the Confederation.

Every year, from June to September, Summer Arts Festival is held in Charlottetown. Its main feature is that the repertoire of theater plays consists only of Canadian authors.

I had a chance to visit one of the most interesting museums of the province located in Orwell, a 30-minute drive east of Charlottetown. This Orwell Corner was opened in 1973. It is a traditional Canadian open-air museum, which recreates the life and traditions of the 14th century. You can also participate in the Celtic dancing, hear a lot of old traditions and Celtic ballads, visit the traditional Scottish holidays, try the much-loved Scottish haggis and appreciate the uniqueness of Scottish humor and beauty of Celtic music.
