The Catastrophic Sinking of Titanic

The catastrophe that happened 104 years ago, on the night of 14-15 April, 1912 in the Atlantic Ocean near the island of Newfoundland, is considered to be the first major disaster in a series of cataclysms that shook the crazy twentieth century. Suspicious people tend to see a mystical sign in the lurch. Mankind, dared to be like God in their ambitions, they were punished. The symbol of technological progress, the biggest ship of the time – Titanic sank during its first voyage. On board, without exaggeration, was a financial elite of civilization – 57 millionaires, whose total capital was more than $250 million in that century (about $5 billion today).

Newspapers named Titanic unsinkable long before its tragic voyage. The very suggestion that the ship, equipped with 15 watertight bulkheads of the latest technology, may sink seemed absurd.

Approximately at 11:40 pm, a watchman spotted an iceberg in the dark. It was impossible to avoid the hitting, and after half a minute, a huge block of ice ripped the starboard side of the liner for 90 meters. Captain didn’t hurry sending the signal SOS! as well as putting people in boats, which started only 50 minutes after the collision and was organized carelessly. Twenty boats, designed for 1,178 passengers were slightly more filled than on half. The result is 1,513 people were dead. Titanic broke into three parts, which are still lying at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean at the depth of 3,812 meters. According to the testimony of those who was there in the bathyscaphe, it is an extremely flat area. Ship scattered all its contents (furniture, dishes, appliances, clothing) on an area of about 5 square km. The pictures of things scattered on the bottom of the ocean resembles a huge fair.

There are many versions of the sinking of Titanic, some of which are really fantastic. One of them is that a ship that sank near the island of Newfoundland is not Titanic but its twin brother Olympic. And it was intentionally sunk in order to turn the multi-million dollar fraud.

Another issue that has long tormented explorers is how ice could rip a solid steel casing of the superliner. Scientists came to the conclusion that the blame is for steelmakers. Rivets that hold sheets of sheathing Titanic were fragile and iceberg easily cut them, and steel was revealed.

The catastrophe of Titanic has acquired a variety of paranormal rumors as well. At one time or another there was information in the Western press about some witnesses who saw a UFO near the sinking ship.

The total area of visible cracks in the skin of Titanic is not more than one square meter. But the sailors know that the ship’s worst situation is when seams and rivets start to break. And the total area of holes does not make any difference: the water fills the hold with catastrophic speed.
