The story is about William "Willy" Loman’s life and his family. It is the story about hope and losses, about difficult relationships in family and decisions that people take. William "Willy" Loman is the main character in a story, along with his sons Biff and Harold, and wife Linda. Willy is a middling salesman, but he doesn’t lose a hope to succeed. However, after time he is beginning to understand that he is not a guy that he wants to be. This fact slowly kills him and his outlook on life; while his older son is trying to follow in the footsteps of his father. Biff Loman loves his father and takes him as example. William lies to family about his job to make a successful image. However, after a while lie comes out and father lose respect in his own eyes. Besides, Biff becomes aware about father affair and his attitude to the father changes radically. Biff will always remember Willy’s betrayal. Maybe this affected the Biff’s behavior or something else. Anyway, after this episode the life of the older son changed for the worse.
Despite Biff had many opportunities when he was a sportsman, he loses them all. He even started stealing. Biff leaves his house and starting getting money for life through different casual jobs. Meanwhile Willy is getting worse and worse; he slowly losing his mind. Maybe father’s unwillingness to realize his failure becomes the reason of his mental illness. After all he decides to pay to his sons to improve their lives; the price – Willy’s own life. He commits suicide in the hope of obtaining insurance. This tragic event becomes a good lesson for Willy’s younger son, Harold. He decides to leave the town to start simple life. Biff takes nothing from his father’s death and continues to take a risky way of life.
I would recommend you watching the best movie adaptation for the Death of a Salesman by Volker Schlöndorff. Dustin Hoffman as Willy, Kate Reid as Linda, John Malkovich as Biff, and Stephen Lang as Harold perfectly coped with their work.
