Basic Information about the Uses of Groundwater

Basically, groundwater is used for personal drinking purposes by a large number of people these days, especially when it comes to the inhabitants of rural areas. Keep in mind that its largest use is irrigating crops.

The area where groundwater fills aquifers is called a saturation or saturated zone, and its top is called a water table. Aquifers are made up of sandstone, sand, gravel, limestone, etc. Water moves through all of these materials as they have quite large connected spaces that allow them to be permeable, and the speed at which is flows usually depends on the size of these spaces and how well they are connected.

It’s possible to find groundwater almost everything, and this is what makes it so usable and accessible. However, water tables can be shallow and deep in addition to the fact that they may fall or raise based on a number of important factors. Melting snow and heavy rains can cause these tables to raise, while heavy pumping results in their falling.

Another thing that should be remembered is that available groundwater supplies are recharged by snow and rain. It’s not a secret that people face severe water shortages in different areas of the world, and the main reason is that groundwater is used faster than it’s replenished in natural ways. Besides, groundwater is polluted by specific human activities in some areas.

Groundwater in aquifers is brought to the surface in a natural manner, and it can be discharged into streams and lakes. People can extract it through the wells drilled into aquifers. What is a well? It’s all about a pipe in the ground that is used to be filled with groundwater which is brought to the surface by special pumps. Remember that shallow wells may be dry if water tables fall below the well bottom. Some wells are artesian and they don’t need any pump due to the natural pressure that forces groundwater to go up and out of them.

In those areas where materials above aquifers are permeable, the worst part is that different pollutants may sink into important groundwater supplies. Take into account that they can be polluted by septic tanks, landfills, leaky gas tanks, pesticides, fertilizers, and so on. When it becomes polluted, people can’t drink groundwater safely.

In conclusion, you should understand that some of the most common uses of groundwater supplies include septic systems and drinking purposes. Wells take it from the same places that septic systems return it.
