UMUC Haircuts is a small business owned by Myra Morningstar. It’s a small shop in the college campus area and its owner wanted to expand it to meet the needs of her clients. To be successful in this adventure, Myra needs to use the latest technology, compete with other businesses in this field, and think about her customers.

Basically, specific barriers to entry this kind of industry are quite minimal. For salons and barbershops, there are only a few in this area with some potential. It’s worth mentioning that high-customer volumes tend to create more competition in this market, so the only existing entry barrier is having a license. This means that such businesses must have a special license with certain permits and their fixed costs are minimal (there are no special items needed).

UMUC haircuts was opened more than 20 years ago in the college campus and Myra started with only one chair, but she managed to expand her enterprise so that it offers fashionable and quality hair styling for male and female clients. Her business was successful and grew into 3 barber chairs and 3 hair styling station in addition to 1 shampoo station. According to the requests of her clients, Morningstar wants to expand her barbershop and add 2 manicure stations. That’s why she is thinking about getting a new area for quality manicures, and the good news is that a small gift shop nearby is for sale now.

When UMUC Haircuts just opened, it was the only barber business within a 10-mile radius, and it’s one of the main reasons why its customer base keeps increasing every year. There are other barbershops that have opened in this area recently, but customers still remain loyal to it. This business keeps growing and increasing its regular profits so that Myra is sure that she can improve its operations and offers in terms of marketing, scheduling, supply management, and so on.

When it comes to employee and customer scheduling, she takes all appointments by phone in addition to accepting all walk-in clients. If there is any vacancy Myra is happy to serve a new client. As her barbershop has expanded, she understood that it’s almost unmanageable to keep track of her employees, their free time, and customer appointments. In the past, she agreed to let employees decide when they wanted to work, but it turned away some walk-in clients. That’s why the owner of UMUC Haircuts wants to improve this important scheduling process to attract more clients and manage her workers in the most effective way possible.
