Importance of Asking For Criticism

We often have to deal with criticism. Most people are not able to perceive criticism and painfully react to it. Also, not everybody can properly criticize other people. Can we learn to constructively react to criticism?

What is criticism? In general, it is an art to express your views in any matter. When criticizing, we want to improve the situation, that is, we want to do something better, but it sometimes doesn’t turn that way.

Criticism is multifaceted and ambiguous. It can give us an opportunity for development and self-improvement, but also it can harm us with all sorts of grievances, complexes, fears, etc.

Critics always pursue one of the following aims:

  • Desire to assert themselves and relieve stress at your expense.
  • Attempt to spoil your mood and hurt you.
  • Attempt to help you change or modify your behavior.
  • Attempt to justify or defend against excessive demands.

How to react on criticism?

Firstly, if critic’s words have touched you, do not show it. There won’t be any empathy or compassion anyway. But if you show that your feelings were hurt, there is a chance to become a constant target of criticism.

Second of all, learn to see in the criticism something useful for yourself. You can even thank the one who criticizes you for the fact that he or she drew your attention to the matter. As a rule, it is very discouraging for the critic.

Thirdly, learn to ask questions to understand why people criticize you.

Fourthly, if the criticism is in re, it would be appropriate to acknowledge your mistakes and sincerely thank a person for constructive criticism.

Criticizing on the other hand is not so simple, because criticism only hurts a person.

If you have to criticize people, then follow this advice.

Before starting the conversation, ask yourself what you want more - to offend a person in order to assert yourself, to prove something to yourself, or to improve the situation.

Praise is the most effective way of perceiving of criticism by another person. So before you criticize, praise the person. Mention person’s strengths and positive qualities, and then proceed to the problem. This way, a person will understand that you feel good about him or her and want to help. Do not forget that your goal is not to humiliate a person, but to help correct his or her mistakes.

Criticize actions, not a person. Be sincere and honestly tell the other person what you do not like. Try to speak softly, so as not to hurt a person. Criticism can only be effective when a person respects you, willing to listen, and cooperate.
