The Biography of Charles A. Lindbergh

Charles Lindbergh was born in Detroit in a family of a man who came from Sweden and a college teacher. Lindbergh, Sr., was a congressman, a pacifist who was against US involvement in the First World War.

Little Charles was very much interested in the technique. Because of this parents’ divorce, Charles went to several schools and entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the Department of Mechanical Engineering. There he became interested in flying business. Two years later, in 1922, he left the Mechanics Faculty, and entered in flying school in Lincoln, Neb.

Lindbergh’s first flight was nine days after he became a passenger of a double biplane Lincoln-Standard Tourabout. To acquire a necessary experience and earn money Charles left Lincoln and traveled around the United States.

Lindbergh was busy parachuting, performing intricate tricks. One of his favorite tricks was a parachute jump from an airplane at a speed of 90 miles per hour. These maneuvers have attracted the attention of the public, and Charles soon became known under the name of Baby Lindbergh. Everybody said that looking at Lindbergh was more exciting than looking at any other pilot. However, a year later his flying program has been finished, and Lindberg was hired as a mechanic.

Lindbergh’s first solo flight happened on 23 May, when Lindbergh came to a former army training field. He bought a biplane JN-4 Jenny for $500, and half an hour later together with another pilot tested it in the air.

In 1919, the New York hotel owner Raymond Orteyg offered $25 000 to the first pilot, who could fly a nonstop flight from New York to Paris. Many pilots have died trying to win this competition.

Lindberg decided to participate in the competition as well, but the flight training demanded money. He persuaded nine businessmen in St. Louis to help with financing. He ordered Ryan Airlines in San Diego to release a special plane – a single-engine monoplane. The development of the project was conducted by Lindbergh himself. He named the car ‘Spirit of St. Louis’.

On 10-11 May 1927, Lindbergh tested the plane by flying from San Diego to New York, with an overnight stay in St. Louis. The flight took 20 hours 21 minutes. The route was 5800 km.

On May 20 at 7:52 Lindberg took off from Roosevelt Field and on May 21 at 17:21 (Paris time – 22:21) he landed at Le Bourget.

For this transatlantic flight Charles Lindbergh was awarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross and became the first person to get this award.
