The Mexican Revolution of 1910

The Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917 is a period in Mexico’s history of a civil war, which is one of the bloodiest in the history of mankind. According to various sources, losses of the war were up to 2 million deaths. The population of the country in 1910 was 15 million people.

On October 15, 1910, Madero, who fled to the United States, published there, “San Luis Potosi Plan”. This document declared invalid election of the president, vice president, deputies, senators, and members of the Supreme Court. Madero said that he assumed the duties of interim president, but as soon as the capital of the Republic and more than half of the state will be in the power of the people, there would be general elections and he would hand over power to the newly elected president. Madero called actions of Diaz government illegal, and promised to return the land taken away to its former owners. In addition, the “San Luis Potosi Plan” put forward general democratic demands: freedom of speech, press, assemblies, amnesty for all political prisoners, etc. Madero called for a general uprising to overthrow Diaz on November 20, 1910.

Even though Diaz tried to stop the rebellions, the position of his regime was shaky, not only because of internal complications, but also due to a foreign policy. Convinced that the dictatorship would fall regardless of whether U.S. would support it or not, the Washington government had to take measures to ensure the avoidance of the revolution to get worse, and, using the situation, to strengthen the economic position of the conquered Mexico. U.S. was sympathetic towards the future policy of Madero and thus his activities. The preparations to overthrow Diaz were carried out in the USA with the tacit consent of President Taft administration.

In June 1911, Madero was elected a President of Mexico., although he didn’t keep his promise in returning the lands to their owners. Having lost the support and trust of the masses, Madero faced a hostile attitude from reactionary forces.

The Constitution of 1917 that was accepted in the end of the Revolution was the most democratic in Latin America. It formed the basis for the consolidation of Mexican society and end of the civil war. In 1919, Zapata was killed and after the assassination of Carranza in 1920, Alvaro Obregon was elected president. He restored stability in the country. Villa received a large estate from the state and stopped fighting against the government, but after a couple of years, was also shot dead by assassins. After that, the main events of the revolution and civil war ended.
