D-Day on World War II

Normandy operation was a strategic operation of the Allies on the landing of troops in France, which began early in the morning on June 6, 1944 and ended on August 31, 1944. After the operation the Allies crossed the River Seine and liberated Paris and went on the offensive to the French-German border.

The operation opened the Western Front in Europe in World War II. Until now, it is the largest landing operation in history – more than 3 million people participated in it and crossed the English Channel (La Manche) from England to Normandy.

On August, 15, U.S, and French forces have successfully conducted Operation Dragoon, as a complement to the Normandy operation. After that, Allied troops advancing from the north and the south of France, joined together and continued the offensive to the German border, freeing almost the entire territory of France.

When planning a landing operation commanders of Allies used the experience gained in the Mediterranean theater of operations, which were the largest landing operations before the Normandy landings.

The operation was highly classified. In the spring of 1944, for security reasons even the transport links with Ireland were temporarily discontinued. All soldiers that received an order for a future operation were transferred to the camp, where they were isolated and were not allowed to leave the base.

The main forces of the Allies, who participated in the operation, were the U.S. Army, the UK and Canada. In May and early June 1944, Allied troops were concentrated mainly in southern England near the port cities. Just before the landing the allies moved their troops to military bases located on the south coast of England, the most important of which was Portsmouth. On the night of June, 5, landing craft was concentrated in the English Channel before landing. The points for landing were mostly beaches of Normandy, Omaha, Sword, Juno, Gold, and Utah.

The invasion in Normandy began with a massive night paratroopers landing on gliders, air attacks, and bombardment of the German coastal positions by the fleet. On the early morning on June, 6, the landing from the sea began. The landing took a few days.

The battle for Normandy continued for more than two months, and its main goal was creation, retention and expansion of beachheads by the Allied forces. The D-Day ended with the liberation of Paris and the fall of the Falaise Pocket at the end of August 1944.
