Making a Comparison of Sparta vs. Athens

The cities of Sparta and Athens were big rivals in ancient Greece. Geographically, both cities were quite close to each other, but they had different values, cultures, lifestyles, and so on. To make their effective comparison, you should consider both differences and similarities to achieve this goal, and it’s necessary to compare the contrast Athens and Sparta.

First, both cities have their historical values for Greece and the rest of the world. When it comes to Athens, you should know that this city is the capital of this country, and it’s a real center of its cultural, economic, financial, and political life. Don’t forget that Athens is also a symbol of democracy, art, and freedom. The name of this famous city is originated from Athena, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom.

When analyzing Sparta, keep in mind that it’s a town located near Evrotas, Peloponnese, Greece. Basically, it was an ancient Greek military state considered as the main protector of this country because it provided a large army. Nowadays, this town is the administrative capital of Laconia.

It’s true that these rivals of ancient Greece made a lot of noise and provided us with many traditions. They may have specific similarities, but they are quite different in their values and lifestyles.

As an example, their form of governments is one of their key similarities. That’s because both Sparta and Athens had the assembly whose members were chosen by people. Athens was ruled by archons (elected each year), while Sparta was ruled by 2 kings until their death. Both parts of the government of Athens had those leaders who were elected by citizens, and that’s why it’s called the birthplace of democracy.

The life in Sparta was quite simple because the main focus of all inhabitants was a war and obedience. Young men were freeing from their industrial and household duties, and slavery allowed them to remain focused on their key military duties. Take into account that young boys were trained to become great warriors, while young girls were trained to be their mothers.

The life in Athens was a true wonderland because inhabitants could get their proper education and try their skills in any kind of art or science. It was also possible for them to serve in the navy or army, but it was not their obligation. Spartan armies provided Greek lands with the necessary defense and their heroism inspired many literary works. One of the main differences between Sparta and Athens is their idea of getting along with the Greeks.
