The Organized Crime: Mafia

Mafia, organized crime, is hierarchically organized groups of criminals, collectively and systematically engaged criminal crafts.

The term ‘mafia’ has appeared in the mid of the 19th century and was originally used only to refer to organized crime in Sicily (Italy). When in the mid of the 20th century Sicilian organized crime has gained resounding ‘popularity’ in Europe, while an organization of the Italian-Americans began to play a leading role in the U.S. criminal world, the word ‘mafia’ has become synonymous in reference to any strong criminal organization.

There are not many large criminal organizations involved in criminal crafts internationally. The most well-known organizations are the Mafia in Sicily, the American “Cosa Nostra”, the Japanese yakuza, and the Chinese triads. In the last third of the 20th century, new criminal organizations began to play an increasingly active role, like Latin American drug cartels, Russian and Albanian mafia, and Nigerian criminal organizations. Contrary to the opinion of the omnipresence of the Mafia, in most countries large and influential mafia organizations are absent.

Organized crime is as old as civilization: pirate fleet and bandit gangs were known very long time ago. However, the modern organized crime appeared only about a hundred years ago and is fundamentally different from criminal organizations in pre-industrial societies.

Traditional organized crime was entirely based on violence. Modern organized crime, on the other hand, performs primarily crimes without victims – engaged in activities that benefit (albeit illusory) not only the perpetrators, but also those who use their services.

Criminologists emphasize the following key characteristics of organized crime:

Stability and sustainability.

Pursuit of profit maximization.

Planning of activities.

Division of labor, differentiation on the heads of various levels and performers – experts in different fields.

Creation of cash insurance reserves.

All these signs copy the characteristics of a legal capitalist enterprise. It is no coincidence: the modern organized crime is essentially a particular business sector – the economic activities of professional criminals, designed to meet the antisocial and extremely scarce needs of ordinary citizens (production of goods and services forbidden by the law). In the end of the 19th century, with the emergence of markets of prohibited goods, mafia-controlled companies headed by criminal authorities were formed.
